What is battery storage?

Battery storage solar integrates solar panels, a solar inverter, a battery inverter and batteries into your home power. Solar panels use an array of crystalline silicon solar cells to convert the sun’s photon energy into DC power. The inverter converts the DC power into 230V AC power to be used in your home. The battery and battery inverter act as a 230V load when generating excess solar and act as a power source when there is insufficient solar energy.

Why use battery storage?

With a conventional solar system, the solar energy is used first by any active loads within the house. Excess energy is exported to the grid through a bidirectional meter so you can be paid for the energy you produce by your energy provider. This excess energy is paid out at 8c per kW/h.

Battery storage systems absorb the excess energy generation to charge the batteries. When the demand is higher than the solar energy provided or in the evening when there is no solar activity, the battery will discharge into your home providing power. This stored power is effectively worth the same as your power import rate.

By storing your solar energy into a battery you are effectively shifting your solar generation to the times of day when you use the power, maximising the effectiveness of your solar generation.

Backup Power

Powercom's battery storage solutions can be used for backup power during grid outages. When the grid power is lost non essential circuits lose power, but the essential loads are run directly from the battery and solar power if available. Low load circuits such as lighting and refrigeration are a good choice for the backup circuit.
